Lent at St. Thomas More: A Season of Prayer, Growth, and Renewal

The season of Lent is a sacred and meaningful time at St. Thomas More School. As a Catholic school community, we embrace these forty days as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and grow closer to God. Lent invites us to focus on prayer, sacrifice, and service — and throughout this season, our students and staff intentionally live out these pillars in faith-filled and age-appropriate ways.

We began our Lenten journey with a special all-school assembly centered on prayer and reflection. Students helped lead the assembly, reminding us that Lent is not simply about “giving something up,” but about making room in our hearts for God. A highlight of the gathering was a student-led sketch about temptation, which thoughtfully portrayed the everyday choices we face. Through their performance, students demonstrated how turning to God for guidance and strength helps us make choices rooted in faith and virtue.

Throughout Lent, our classrooms take on a reflective tone. Teachers guide students in conversations about the meaning of the season, encouraging them to think about how they can grow spiritually and serve others more intentionally. Students set personal Lenten goals, participate in prayer services, and spend time reflecting on Scripture. As a school community, we also look for opportunities to practice almsgiving through service projects that support those in need.

Lent at St. Thomas More is a time of unity. Whether gathered in prayer, serving others, or encouraging one another in our commitments, we walk this journey together. It is a season that strengthens our faith, deepens our compassion, and prepares our hearts for the joy of Easter.

We are grateful for the opportunity to nurture not only academic excellence but also spiritual growth. May this Lenten season continue to be one of renewal and grace for our entire St. Thomas More family.

STM Students

First Graders are Learning the Power of Voice, Empathy, and Faith in Action

Last month, Grade 1 students at St. Thomas More Catholic School completed a meaningful learning project as part of their unit on needs and wants. Through thoughtful discussions, students learned that many people, right here in our own city, do not always have all of their basic needs met. Guided by our faith, students reflected on our call to love our neighbors and care for those in need, as Jesus teaches.

As a class, students put their faith into action by gathering items for birthday bags to donate to Paul’s Pantry. This service project helped students understand the importance of sharing God’s love through kindness, generosity, and compassion.

The unit also encouraged students to recognize that they are important members of their community and that their voices matter. Students were asked to identify an issue they considered especially important. Through discussion, the class chose to write about the belief that all people, regardless of their background, are created by God and deserve to be welcomed with dignity and respect. Students shared that it is unfair when others are made to feel unwelcome.

Students learned the parts of a letter, how to respectfully share their opinions, and how writing can communicate ideas and advocate for positive change. Each student wrote a letter to the Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich, explaining why they believe people from other countries should be welcome in our city.

We were thrilled to receive a response from Mayor Genrich, who wrote:

“Ms. Gossen’s class, thank you so much for taking the time to share your ideas for our city with me! As your mayor, I rely on the input of residents like you to do the best job I can. Thanks again, and have a great 2026!”

Through this experience, our students learned that living out our Catholic faith means serving others, standing up for fairness, and using our voices to build a more loving community. We are proud of our first graders for showing what it means to be thoughtful, faith-filled citizens.

Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Thomas More

Each year, St. Thomas More honors Our Lady of Guadalupe, a beloved tradition that brings our parish and school community together in prayer, music, and thanksgiving. This beautiful celebration is a chance for students and families to remember Our Lady’s compassion and faith and to share in the rich cultural customs of the season.

This Friday, December 12, our school celebration will begin with Mañanitas, followed by a reflection led by Father José, songs, and the presentation of roses. The program will start at 1:45 PM and be held at the SSPP Church, a heartfelt moment for students of all ages to participate and for families to join in solidarity and joy.

All families are warmly invited to attend and celebrate with us. Come share in the music, prayer, and community as we honor Our Lady of Guadalupe together.
