Advent is a beautiful season of anticipation and hope, during which we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming.” Over the four weeks leading to Christmas, we embrace traditions, prayer, and reflection to center ourselves on the true meaning of the season.
How to Celebrate Advent
One of the most cherished Advent traditions is the Advent wreath, which holds five candles: three purple, one pink, and one white in the center. These candles symbolize various aspects of the Advent journey:
- Purple candles: Represent preparation through prayer, fasting, and reflection.
- Pink candle: Symbolizes joy and rejoicing as Christmas approaches.
- White candle: This signifies Christ’s purity and light, and it is celebrated on Christmas Day.
This season is also an opportunity to spread God’s love through acts of kindness. Consider engaging in activities like:
- Volunteering at a homeless shelter.
- Organizing or contributing to a food drive.
- Donating supplies to a local animal shelter.
Teaching children about Advent is a beautiful way to show them how joy flows from the birth of Jesus. Shift the focus from the material aspects of Christmas and emphasize the importance of slowing down, reflecting, and spending intentional time together in prayer and preparation.
Advent at St. Thomas More
At St. Thomas More, we embrace the Advent season through community traditions:
- Lighting the Advent Wreath: Each week, we gather to light a candle, pray, and reflect as a community.
- Food Drive: Throughout December, we will collect items to support those in need. A list of suggested donations and pick-up dates will be shared soon.
This Advent season, let’s come together to prepare our hearts, share God’s love, and joyfully anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
