Honoring the Souls of the Faithful Departed: All Souls Day and Día de los Muertos

All Souls Day is a special time set aside to honor the souls of the faithful departed. For Catholics, it is an invitation to remember loved ones who have passed away by offering prayers, Masses, and sacrifices for the repose of their souls. It serves as a reminder that the Church Militant (the faithful on earth) can assist the Church Suffering (souls in purgatory) through these acts of devotion, with hope for their entrance into the fullness of heaven.

The Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is closely connected to All Souls Day. This vibrant celebration blends pre-Columbian customs with Catholic practices, as families gather to decorate graves, build ofrendas (altars), and celebrate with food and music. It is a time to honor and remember deceased loved ones, embodying the belief that the dead remain united with the living in spirit and strengthening our bonds with those who have gone before us.

Join us for our Día de los Muertos celebration on October 1, 2024! The day will begin with Mass at 8:30 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul’s Church. Later, at 2:00 p.m., Kately Javier, Evangelizing Catechesis Director for the Green Bay Diocese, will present “A Tribute to All the Faithful Departed.” She will share insights on the meaning of All Souls Day and its connection to Día de los Muertos. This will be a special time for reflection, remembrance, and community.
