Saying Goodbye to Mrs. Shelly Bennie

After eight wonderful years serving students, staff, and faculty, Mrs. Shelly, our beloved STM lunch lady, is retiring at the end of this school year. While we’re all sad to see her go, we’re grateful for the warmth, kindness, and dedication she has shown to our school community. Mrs. Shelly shared that she’s loved every moment of her time at STM, and she will miss the laughter and smiles of the students. Although sad to leave, she’s excited to spend more time with her two sons, two granddaughters, one grandson, and her husband, with whom she has been happily married for 48 years!  

In addition to her work at STM, Mrs. Shelly is a member of Resurrection Church, where she helps with special events and readings.

Mrs. Shelly’s last day will be the end of this school year. If you’d like to say goodbye or express gratitude, do so before then. We will certainly miss her, but we wish her all the best in her retirement.

Our students took action this Earth Day by walking around the school to collect trash and care for God’s creation. God has entrusted us with this beautiful planet, and it is our responsibility to protect and nurture it, not just today, but every day.

As the school year comes to a close, our middle school students are finishing strong, not only in their academic studies but also in their faith journeys. One highlight from this spring has been their incredible work in Religion class, where they’ve been learning about the many ways to evangelize and share the Good News of Christ.

Under the guidance of Mr. Hernandez, the students have launched a truly inspiring project: a student bulletin, “Hawk Talk,” shared with both the SSPP parishioners and our school community following Wednesday Mass. In this special publication, students share personal reflections on scripture, offering thoughtful insights that touch the hearts of readers of all ages.

But that’s not all—they also include updates on exciting school events and spotlight one of our beloved staff members in each edition. What makes this bulletin even more impressive is that our students are writing in both English and Spanish, using their bilingual talents to reach and uplift a wider audience.

We are so incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, creativity, and heartfelt reflections. And we are especially grateful to Mr. Hernandez for the role he plays in guiding them both spiritually and academically. His leadership and passion for teaching are helping to form the next generation of faith-filled leaders.

Who knows—maybe some of our students will be inspired to pursue journalism or media as a way to continue sharing the Good News with the world!

Mrs. Tushaus is an English/Language Arts (ELA) teacher at our school. She consistently goes above and beyond by demonstrating a willingness to help others. Her initiative shines through as she seeks ways to improve efficiency and to foster collaboration with her peers. Additionally, she shows a remarkable ability to look out for the well-being of the entire school, embodying a spirit of teamwork and support at STM!

We’re honored to recognize Outstanding Volunteer, Cynthia Pahl. She was presented with this award at a Mass on January 22nd.

She has faithfully served the St. Thomas More Catholic School (STM) library for the past three years, sharing books with students, planning lessons, creating bulletin boards, and checking out and reshelving books every single week. She is an avid reader and loves to share books with all the STM students! She serves in other volunteer capacities throughout the community and is a valued member of our teacher team. She treats each STM student with bookmarks and special tokens to encourage their reading and learning.
